Variety of interfaces

To connect a monitor to a computer without problems, the connectors on them must be of the same type; Sometimes you can use an adapter, but a loss of quality is inevitable. The choice of interface can be made from the following list:

  • VGA (D-Sub) is an old analog interface designed to transmit images in low resolution and low quality;
  • DVI -I and DVI -D - low-level digital interface, very common - found on most monitors and video cards;
  • HDMI is a universal interface (it can transmit not only pictures, but also sound), found not only on computers and monitors, but also on TVs and game consoles;
  • DisplayPort is a modern option for connecting monitors with 4k resolution;
  • Thunderbolt is the fastest interface to which you can connect a large number of monitors without losing image quality.

It is impossible to connect something incorrectly - all connectors and plugs have a completely different design. Adapters can only be used when connecting connectors of the same type (for example, analog VGA and DVI-I, transmitting analog signal along with digital). To connect an analog interface to a digital one, you need a special device - a DAC.

The easiest way to output a signal from a laptop to a monitor is to select only one monitor that matches the additional video interface. The signal will be separated in exactly the same way as in the case of a conventional desktop computer. It will also be possible to display different images on separate and built-in screens.

Setting up a second monitor

In most cases, the system itself will detect new equipment and display an image on it. As a rule, when connected to a laptop, the same image begins to be displayed on both screens, and when connecting a second monitor to a desktop PC, the desktop lengthens. However, sometimes this may not happen. Before adjusting the output of different images, you should understand this problem.

Enabling a second monitor in any version Windows systems carried out through the control panel, in the screen settings menu. There are three parameters available for adjustment:

  • image output mode – on one or both screens, mirrored, desktop stretching;
  • screen resolution;
  • orientation – horizontal or vertical.

After this, both monitors will have a common desktop. This already allows you to have a different image on different screens - for this, of course, you will have to run applications in windowed mode and place them in a certain area of ​​​​the desktop.

Creating two independent desktops

If you need to have two separate desktops, easy connection monitors for a shared video card will not be enough. You can do this in several ways:

  • connect the equipment to a modern card with several GPUs and select the appropriate mode in the settings;
  • connect each monitor to a separate video card;
  • use special equipment, connected to one video card and separating the video signal.

In the latter case, you can even connect two monitors to a laptop - in this case, there will be one large desktop on them, and a second on the built-in display.

As you probably already know, the most natural-looking mode is the “cinema” mode, which is free from excessive image smoothing, the action of “enhancers” and excessively bright colors, as well as unnatural shades.

It is most preferable to adjust the brightness level that is comfortable for you, relative to the lighting level in the room. You can use automatic brightness control as it can protect your eyes and save energy. Based on the brightness of the image, you adjust the contrast and definition of the outline so that both dark and light areas are well defined and the image is clear - without rough edges or double edges.

Next you will need to adjust the color intensity - with this basic setup as a “movie”, in most cases it can be increased a little. If you often watch sports programs, it is worth activating the function for optimizing the image of dynamic scenes ( Samsung "Motion Plus", LG "TruMotion" etc.). Together with noise suppression, this can give a very smooth, but at the same time quite unnatural picture.

Of course it can't be called . In my opinion, a TV should not only show some kind of picture, but also introduce as little distortion as possible into the original video material. Do not forget that the main purpose of any TV is to convey to you exactly the image that they wanted to show you. With the advent of HDTV, most of the standards were immediately outdated, and the most relevant now is the REC709 standard, which is used in high-definition television (HD) and Blu-Ray video.

The general parameters for a correct image are as follows:

  • color temperature 6500K (D65);
  • linear gamma, recommended value 2.22, for a darkened room 2.4;
  • recommended brightness ~120 cd/m²;
  • color gamut according to REC709 (same as sRGB gamut).

Modern TV manufacturers customize their products horribly, as they are only interested in increasing sales. As a result, the colors are distorted: more “bright blues” and “vivacious reds”, most importantly, more than their competitors, so that the products look more attractive on store shelves.

Unfortunately, the only sure way to get the correct image on the TV screen is. It consists in the fact that reference images are supplied to the TV input, and measurements are taken from the screen. Next, adjust the TV settings until the image parameters are as close as possible to those required by the standard. But this setup is quite labor-intensive and requires knowledge, and above all equipment.

Is it possible to make the image on your TV screen more accurate without resorting to hardware adjustments? Here are some tips based on my experience setting up various TVs.

We have dealt with the issue " Which picture mode should I choose? Yes, on the vast majority of TVs, the most correct mode is Cinema/Cinema. Close to the standard color temperature (6500K) is the Warm mode. If there is a choice of Warm1/Warm2 (for example, on Samsung TVs), individually determine your preference. It is recommended to turn off some settings to get the best picture.
For example, those that adjust brightness/contrast in automatic mode: “dynamic contrast”, “energy saving mode”, “light sensor”, “dynamic backlight” and I advise you to disable the “Dynamic” image mode.

“Contrast” is also important; in theory, it is the ratio of the maximum brightness of the white field (white level) to the black level (the minimum luminosity level of the panel). In the TV menu, this setting changes exactly the white level, that is, the level of maximum image brightness.

Tips for setting “contrast” for plasma panels:

  • It is better to adjust the “contrast” parameter in the dark;
  • display an image with a white level window (100IRE) (you can find it on the Internet);
  • set the “contrast” parameter to a value close to the maximum (90-95);
  • reduce the “contrast” parameter until the picture with the white level (100IRE) stops “hurting the eyes.”

In plasma Samsung TVs There is a cell light parameter that has a big impact on the overall brightness of the image. You can immediately set it to a value close to the maximum (18-20), and then follow the recommendations. LCD TVs are designed differently - they have a “backlight brightness” parameter (less commonly called “backlight contrast”), which is most important for the overall brightness of the image.

Tips for adjusting “contrast” for LCD panels:

  • It is better to make adjustments in the dark;
  • set the “contrast” parameter close to the maximum value (90-95);
  • display an image with a white level window (100IRE);
  • set the “backlight brightness” parameter to the maximum or higher value than necessary;
  • reduce the “backlight brightness” parameter until the picture with a white level (100IRE) stops “hurting the eyes.”

I do not recommend using the maximum values ​​for the “contrast” parameter, since some TV models may experience non-linearities when setting the maximum value color temperature.
An overly bright image (real brightness on a TV is determined by “contrast”/“backlight brightness”) strains your vision and leads to eye fatigue, remember this when you adjust these settings.

Brightness setting

The "brightness" parameter determines the black level. To install it in the correct position, you can use the special “Pluge pattern” image (can be downloaded on the Internet). In this image, the leftmost vertical stripe is equivalent to black. To set the “brightness” parameter to the correct position, first increase it until you can clearly distinguish all the stripes, and then decrease the “brightness” parameter until the leftmost vertical stripe merges with the background. Plus, you can use special setup discs, such as AVSHD, where in the “Basic Settings” section you will find the necessary images to configure the basic parameters of the TV.

Setting the correct sharpness value

“Sharpness” (sharpness) - this parameter is responsible for the clarity of the image. This parameter is necessary to obtain a clear image with different distances viewing. To configure this parameter, you can use the special “Sharpness pattern” image.

The method for setting “clarity” is as follows:

  • position yourself at a comfortable distance to watch TV;
  • display “Sharpness pattern” on the TV screen;
  • increase the “sharpness” parameter to the maximum, or to a value at which artifacts of excessive “sharpness” will be clearly visible: light halos around objects and thickening of thin lines;
  • Reduce the Sharpness setting until image artifacts, such as light halos around objects and thickening of fine lines, disappear.

Adjusting color/saturation

Set the parameter correctly chroma/saturation It's difficult without measurements. My advice is to display high-quality nature photographs on the TV screen with many shades of green (since the shade is the most difficult to perceive and the eye is most sensitive to it, and on many TVs there can be an overabundance) and adjust the “color/saturation” parameter until the image will not look as realistic as possible. Additionally, you need to check the settings on high-quality photographs of people; skin tones should be natural.

If your TV has white balance settings and a color management system (CMS), then you can only adjust them correctly using. It is useless to configure these parameters “by eye”.
