OnePlus smartphones. OnePlus smartphones The screen of a mobile device is characterized by its technology, resolution, pixel density, diagonal length, color depth, etc.

OnePlus 5T is similar to its predecessor and differs from it only in the overgrown screen and the relocation of the fingerprint scanner to the back.

OnePlus 5 looked like, but the new model looks more independent due to the fashionable bezel-less feature. Now the screen occupies not 73%, as before, but 80% of the front surface area of the smartphone. For comparison, the y has 77%, and the Galaxy S8 has 83.6%. That is, Oneplus 5T is still not the most frameless on the market. In addition to the sprawling screen, we note the rounded edges and on-screen buttons. The back panel is distinguished only by a round fingerprint scanner, a dual camera and a corporate logo.

The dimensions of the smartphone are 156.1x75x7.3 mm, weight is 162 grams. So, it is slightly higher, but in other respects it is almost the same. The same one turns out to be shorter, narrower, but heavier. The smartphone has a non-separable metal body.

The OnePlus 5T can be purchased in black, with more colors likely to appear over time.

Screen

Not much is known about the OnePlus 5T screen. The most important thing here is the AMOLED matrix and the fashionable screen aspect ratio - 18:9 (or 2:1). The display diagonal is 6.01 inches, resolution is 2160x1080 pixels. The pixel density is 401 per inch, more than enough for a clear picture. You can expect wide viewing angles and infinite contrast from the AMOLED matrix. Interesting details include an expanded color gamut and Gorilla Glass 5 protection.

Cameras

The OnePlus 5T cameras look promising: two rear (20 + 16 MP) and a front 16 MP.

Interestingly, this time the company changed the principle of operation of the dual camera. In OnePlus 5, this duo worked in the manner of the iPhone 7 Plus (regular and telephoto lenses). But OnePlus 5T abandoned the telephoto lens; they are both wide-angle and color. The 16 MP Sony IMX398 module has fairly large pixels (1.12 microns) and a wide aperture (f/1.7). The second IMK376K module with the same aperture is designed to improve the quality of shooting in low light. It's an odd choice because the higher resolution of 20MP means its individual pixels are smaller, just 1 micron. There is another typical feature of dual cameras - background blur in portrait photographs. The only thing missing is optical stabilization, but there is electronic stabilization.

The front camera with a 16 MP IMX371 sensor, f/2.0 aperture and 1 micron pixels is designed for selfies and smartphone unlocking. This feature is called Face Unlock and is clearly intended to compete with Face ID. True, it works only in nine cases out of ten, as the manufacturer himself honestly admits. So for now, this feature is still not a competitor to the new Apple technology. Separately, I would like to yearn for autofocus, which is not announced for the front camera.

Communications

The OnePlus 5T communications suite is typically flagship:

  • high-speed and dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac
  • LTE Cat 12 support (up to 600 Mbps)
  • Bluetooth 5.0
  • A-GPS
  • NFC chip.

Some may miss FM radio or an infrared port, although we personally don't miss them that much. The main connector on the body is USB type C. The smartphone works with two nanoSIM cards.

Battery

The battery capacity of the smartphone remains the same - 3300 mAh, which looks modest for a 6-inch screen. Although this should be enough for about a day of battery life. At the same time, there is an interesting feature, proprietary fast charging Dash Charge. It is promised that 30 minutes with a charger will be enough for a whole day of use. And it will take about an hour to fully charge. The interesting thing here is that this process is usually accelerated due to increased voltage, but in this case it was left at 5V and the charging current was increased to 4A.

Performance

The performance of the OnePlus 5T will be typical flagship, but the same as its predecessor. The fact is that the hardware of the device has not changed, it is the same 6 or 8 GB of RAM and the top Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 (4 cores of 2.4 GHz + 4 cores of 1.9 GHz) with an Adreno 540 graphics accelerator. OnePlus 5 worked perfectly , fast, smooth in any games and applications. Therefore, we expect the same from OnePlus 5T.

Memory

The OnePlus 5T has impressive amounts of permanent memory - 64 or 128 GB (fast UFS 2.1 standard), although there is no memory card slot. The manufacturer generously piled on RAM - 6 or 8 GB of LPDDR4X type (fast and energy efficient today). This should be more than enough for storing data and for simultaneous work with several applications.

Peculiarities

OnePlus 5T received the proprietary Oxygen OS shell and . At the same time, the manufacturer has already promised to update the phone to Android 8. The features of the smartphone include a dual camera, Face Unlock and a fashionable elongated screen with thin frames.

Price

The price for OnePlus 5T starts at 500 euros (about 35,000 rubles); such a flagship cannot be called very cheap. It is still unclear when it will appear in Russia - we are not on the list of lucky countries where OnePlus 5T goes on sale on November 21st.

From year to year, OnePlus pleases with the release of the most sophisticated and relatively affordable flagships. In 2017, OnePlus 5 was released, which was heavily criticized immediately after its release. And all because of errors and software flaws. Two months after the release, the dust settled, several updates were released and the smartphone became uncompromisingly cool.

Many people find and read reviews with one goal - to understand whether this or that gadget is worth buying. And right now I’ll make the task easier for those who are looking closely at the hero of today’s review.

OnePlus 5 buy definitely worth it!

Here's a quick clarification. If you need the coolest device on the market, but your own oil well is still in development, then you should buy OnePlus 5 and only that.

Anyone who is interested in details, details and those very nuances, welcome to the main part of the review.

Equipment

The box will not surprise those who have owned at least one smartphone from 1+. We have everything the same: thick, high-quality cardboard in white and red colors.

For newcomers, everything will be extremely interesting, because unboxing any generation of OnePlus is practically an adventure. Here the box is made stylishly, and everything inside is arranged with love. With a love for gadgets and quality things, of course.

  • power supply with fast charging support DachCharge (5 V and 4 A)
  • USB Type-C cable
  • paper clip with a smile
  • postcard with a message from the head of the company to fans
  • branded stickers and, of course, all sorts of different pieces of paper

Did you enjoy unboxing? Everything is just beginning.

A design that has never been “borrowed”. Never!

All this, of course, is very strange. OnePlus has always followed its own path, stuck to its own design concept, tried all sorts of materials, including “sandpaper” in the second version, and therefore their devices have never looked like their competitors.

This is OnePlus 2

The fourth generation of the smartphone (yes, they don’t like the number four in China, so this number was stupidly changed) is suspiciously very reminiscent of the iPhone 7 Plus. Especially if they took it and rounded the corners a little more.

Apart from the similarities and differences with its competitors, OnePlus 5 looks very good.

And even better, it lies in your hand. Believe me, the picture does not convey the sensations that you experience when you take the device in your hand.

Here's what comes to mind when you hold a smartphone in your hands:

“It’s thin, big, light, made of metal!”

A protective film is applied to the screen directly from the factory. It completely ruins everything, because the protective glass of the 1+5 is strongly rounded at the edges, but here the thick film with its rough and sharp corners prevents you from using the smartphone in the form in which the designers intended it.

However, thrifty people still shouldn’t remove it, even though the protective glass (the 5th “gorilla”, for a second) perfectly resists scratches, abrasions and other damage.

Under the screen, as always, there is a fingerprint scanner, surrounded by two touch buttons. The latter have their own backlight, but it is very dim. It could have been made brighter.

The scanner, as always, works at lightning speed and 11 out of 10 attempts are successful. I'm serious!

Camera capabilities

From the next generation model you expect improvements on all fronts, bug fixes, and so on. And partly, the five received some positive changes. Let's figure it out in order.

Front camera

Video recording

Shot excellent quality 4K video. Everything in the new product is the same, except that the optical stabilization has been removed. Now we only have digital stabilization, which compensates for shaking by cropping part of the frame. And then! This functionality was not added immediately, until the new owners of the device made a fuss about it.

Unfortunately, the 5 still shoots Slow Motion video (120 fps) in only 720p resolution. Full HD was not delivered, despite the fact that the same iPhone 7 set the fashion in this direction last fall.

Autonomy

The smartphone has a 3,300 mAh battery and this is 100 “mach” less than its predecessor (but the new product has become 1 mm thinner, oooh!). The updated smartphone received a 10-nanometer chipset, therefore, power consumption should have decreased by 40 percent.

In any case, we have a smartphone that works stably all day long. If you drive it both in the tail and in the mane (without games), then it will work from 8 am to 9 pm, and the screen glow time will be 4 hours 20 minutes.

The real pride of the company is its proprietary fast charging Dash Charge. For example, in 30 minutes a smartphone gains charge from 0 to 60%. Impressive? Wrong word!

The battery reaches 100 percent in exactly one and a half hours. The results are excellent.

By the way, for fast charging to work, you only need to use the included power supply and cable. Other accessories will charge the smartphone much more slowly.

Sound quality

The multimedia speaker is quite loud and of average quality. Of course, there are no bass or hints of them, but the main thing is that the sound does not wheeze or creak.

Unfortunately, OxygenOS does not have its own application for playing audio files. Its place has been occupied by Play Music from Google, which very persistently offers to subscribe to the service. This infuriated me at first, but now I’m thinking about agreeing. Finished it off, bastards!

The sound in the headphones is good. I didn't hear anything extraordinary, but nothing was a failure either. Everything is at the level of most competitors.

By the way, the device supports aptX and aptX HD codecs, that is, with wireless headphones that are compatible with the same protocols, the sound quality will be great.

What I especially like about OnePlus smartphones are the gestures on the lock screen.

Here is one of them, my favorite.

In the car I listen to music from my smartphone. The five is mounted on the dashboard and connected to the car’s standard acoustics. The coolest thing is that with OnePlus 5 I don’t need to unlock the smartphone, open the music player, press the “Play” button - the whole thing is replaced by one single gesture. It is enough to swipe the switched off screen with two fingers from top to bottom and playback starts. To pause, you need to do the same; to switch tracks, draw the symbol “>” or “<».

Brilliant! And it doesn’t distract from the road at all.

Bottom line

At first I really, really liked everything. I was delighted with the smartphone, but only until I opened photos from the device’s cameras on my computer.

OnePlus 5 is a top-end flagship that costs about $150-200 cheaper than the same one. However, it shoots about as much worse.

Let's put all the dots and i's.

Do you want top-end hardware? Ideal software optimization? And in order not to spend 40+ thousand rubles for the whole thing, then choose OnePlus 5. The current price tag now, by the way, is $460 or about 27,000 rubles. I bought a smartphone, no problems, so I can confidently recommend it. If anything, use the ONHSCK coupon to get a discount. Not working? Try this one - OPBKB.

Do you want top-end hardware? Not the most ideal, but still an excellent shell? Buy it. It can now be purchased for around 40 thousand rubles in gray supplies.

Do you want your smartphone to be cool from all sides? Then there is only one option left - . This Taiwanese was and remains the best flagship of this year in terms of price-quality ratio. In gray supplies the price is around 40 thousand, the official price is from 44,990 rubles.

Still, I liked 1+5.

This is such a cool device that it becomes boring to use over time. I'm serious. This happened to me and now the same thoughts appear again.

There's no lag, apps launch lightning fast, the design is great, and for all its shortcomings, the camera still meets most of my photography needs. It’s as if you received the perfect smartphone, you use it, you’re happy, but what next? No adventures for you.

Starting with this review, we introduce a separate evaluation of the devices. If you see the “Super G Recommends” stamp on the main photo, you will know that this is one of the best smartphones in its smartphone category.

The OnePlus 5 design is a cross between the OnePlus 3T and the iPhone 7 Plus. Moreover, there is clearly more of the latter. The Chinese diligently demonstrated how they went through dozens of concepts, struggled with the choice, did not sleep at night - and still came to the Apple style. What a coincidence!

But when you take OnePlus 5 in your hand for the first time, you understand that it is different. More elegant, neater. Ironically, the “five” seems more premium and expensive than the iPhone 7 Plus. Assembly, quality of materials - everything is excellent.

It's nice to return to metal after the slippery, stained glass flagships - HTC U11, Sony Xperia XZ Premium. This may be an indirect merit of Apple, but thanks to OnePlus for making the case out of aluminum with a matte finish. In a week of not the most gentle use, not a single scratch appeared.

OnePlus 5 comes in two variants: dark gray and black. The first has 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of physical memory, the second has 8 and 128 GB, respectively. The colors are very similar, and here's a spoiler: there's no point in paying more for the older model.

With a 5.5" screen diagonal, we get almost a “shovel”, but a comfortable and reliable shovel. The dimensions are almost a copy of the OnePlus 3T. The smartphone is thin - 7.25 mm - and rounded at the edges, so it fits well into the palm. As far as possible For this size, the only thing I didn’t like was the volume rocker: when held in your left hand, you have to press it with your fingernail.

The mode switch is still there. It’s a convenient thing: I went to a meeting and set “Do not disturb”, went to bed and turned on “Mute”. The modes are customizable, in fact, like many other things in a smartphone: indicator color, vibration strength, etc. This is why OnePlus is loved: the guys unobtrusively add simple but very useful settings.

The Home button works as a fingerprint scanner. So quickly and accurately that you are amazed. After the Google Pixel and Galaxy S8 Plus sensors, the difference is noticeable: there the unlocking occurs with a slight delay, here it is instantaneous.

Honey is spoiled by three fly in the ointment:

  1. No protection from water. More precisely, the smartphone is not IP certified, and OnePlus does not guarantee water resistance. Judging by the reviews, the case will withstand being hit by jets of water or walking in the rain, but swimming in the pool will kill it. And for a 2017 flagship, this is a serious omission.
  2. A microSD slot was never added. The minus is insignificant, even 64 GB will be enough for many.
  3. The dual camera module protrudes. This does not affect the convenience in any way, but the metal edging may get scratched over time.

As a result, OnePlus 5 does not offer anything new in terms of design. Compared to OnePlus 3T, the device has lost its originality. Beautiful, practical, but does not leave the feeling of being secondary: the Apple style comes through in every detail. If you don’t have such associations, you will definitely like OnePlus 5.

Dual camera with double zoom

Dual camera is the trend of 2017. Some people set this trend, others resist. OnePlus 5 follows the canons of the iPhone 7 Plus: the second camera is needed for zooming and shooting portraits with background blur. Like in cameras.

photos

One camera has a 16-megapixel Sony IMX398 sensor with a pixel size of 1.12 microns and optics with an f/1.7 aperture. This is a wide-angle camera, and OnePlus 5 shoots with it by default. The second, with a shorter focal length, received a 20-megapixel Sony IMX350 sensor with a 1-micron pixel and an f/2.6 aperture.

In simple terms, the first camera captures more light and detail, the second has higher resolution. Why is this necessary? To zoom in on a picture without losing quality. OnePlus claimed 2x zoom, but didn't say how it works. And it works very cleverly.

The maximum optical zoom of the 16-megapixel camera brings objects closer by 1.6 times. Everything is super, we don’t lose quality. Having reached a crop size of 1.6, the module switches to the 20 megapixel camera and activates the digital zoom. As a result, the quality of images should not decrease at x2 magnification. The key word is “should”.

No approach

Zoom x2

Move the slider left and right to compare photos. The left photo is clearly overexposed: highlights, noise. The right one is much darker, but the detail has also dropped. And in both frames you can see the glare from the streetlights.

The fact is that the jump from f/1.7 to f2.6 aperture is striking, especially in night photographs. Brightness drops, detail deteriorates, noise creeps in from the corners. During the day it is not so noticeable. In addition, the pixel size of the second camera is smaller, which affects the quality even worse.

But the situation is this: people either don’t use zoom at all, or use it to its fullest, without really paying attention to quality. There aren't many smartphones in the world with optical zoom, and one of them, the OnePlus 5, does a good job.

Another use for the dual camera is portrait mode. The software determines the distance between the subject and the background, blurring the latter. It still works crookedly: the automation often mistakes hair and clothes for the background, the background for a piece of the object, and the object itself “makes noise” and loses sharpness. OnePlus promises to fix portrait mode with updates. Apple, over there, is still puffing up.

The zoom also works when shooting video, the maximum resolution is 4K. There is no optical stabilization, only electronic, but it does not work when recording 4K or even FullHD 60 fps. At 30 fps, the electronic one behaves like the EIS in the Google Pixel: smoothly smoothes out vibrations and twitches hysterically when cornering.

OnePlus 5 takes photos at the same level as other flagships. It received 87 points in the DxOMark mobile camera rating. Less than Google Pixel and HTC U11, and more than iPhone 7. It’s funny that DxOMark itself helped to “cut” software for OnePlus.

During the day, photos are difficult to distinguish from the same Pixel or Galaxy S8 Plus: bright, sharp, with the correct exposure and white balance. HDR is a great help when shooting against the sun.

The darker it is, the more often the frames come out blurry and noisy: without optical stabilization, the automation increases ISO and increases shutter speed. But this is not as common a phenomenon as glare from lamps and lanterns. OnePlus 3T suffered from the same thing, nothing has changed in a year.

OnePlus 5 lacks optical stabilization. Getting a sharp photo in the dark or shooting a smooth video becomes a challenge. Although the camera produces very good results, competitors are still better.

The front camera is 16 MP, like the OnePlus 3T, but the quality is slightly better. Now the sharpness is in perfect order. The quality is not bad, but there is nothing special to brag about. There is no autofocus, there is HDR - it helps to “pull out” objects from the background.

Move the slider left and right to compare photos.

The screen was inherited

Mobile HDR support? 4K resolution? Aspect ratio 18:9? There is no place for innovation here. The company didn’t bother with the display: it took the Optic AMOLED matrix from OnePlus 3T, turned it over and put it in OnePlus 5.

There were consequences. When scrolling quickly, a “jelly” effect appears: the image seems to float and oscillate. It's not annoying, you just notice it occasionally - that's all. Many people make a big deal out of this. Don't worry, OnePlus has already promised to fix the jelly with software updates.

The colors of the screen are saturated, do not fade when tilted, the black color is perfectly black, this is the merit of AMOLED. The minimum and maximum brightness is fine, sufficient both in the dark and under the sun. Resolution is FullHD, this is the golden mean for 5.5": it doesn’t drain the battery, and the detail is high.

The display is covered with Gorilla Glass 5 with a curved effect. Visually, this smoothes out the appearance and makes it more graceful. There are frames around the display, but they are thin. It would be strange to demand that a $479 smartphone be frameless.

A protective film with an oleophobic coating is already glued on top of the display. You can peel off the film; there is also a grease-repellent layer underneath it. This is not Huawei P10, where I removed the film and was left without “oleophobia”.

The display supports DCI-P3 color gamut. It's somewhere between the cool and oversaturated default settings and the dull sRGB. The colors are shifted to warmer tones, making the image appear more cinematic. So far, DCI-P3 is used in digital cinemas, some Apple equipment, the Microsoft Surface Studio computer and the Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphone.

The screen is simply good. Without cool bells and whistles and with standard FullHD resolution. Color reproduction and brightness are excellent, but many people are confused by the “jelly” effect when scrolling. Ideally, this shouldn't happen.

Another useful setting is Reading Mode. The image becomes monochrome and changes white balance depending on the surrounding lighting. The mode is ideal for reading books and can turn on automatically: launch Amazon Kindle or FBReader - the screen turns black and white, turn it off - color again. Comfortable.

Fastest in tests and in practice

No matter what camera or design OnePlus chooses, the hardware is always top-end. OnePlus 5 is no exception. This is the most powerful Android smartphone in the world. On board it has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, Adreno 540 graphics and 6/8 GB of RAM. In the performance test, AnTuTu gives 181 thousand points. Compare with competitors:

The difference is not that big, and in some tests OnePlus even loses. Everything is learned in practice: applications open instantly, switching between them without delay. Even the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus began to slow down over time. Everything is great here.

The power reserve is enough for games for 1-2 years in advance. WoT: Blitz “flies” at maximum settings with 16x anti-aliasing, the frame rate does not drop below 60 fps. Asphalt Extreme and the online shooter Guns of Boom also do not lag.

At the same time, OnePlus 5 does not heat up at all. We streamed the video for 14 hours, played all the games in a row, ran the AnTuTu test three times, and the case remained barely warm or completely cold. Forget about throttling altogether. We don’t know how OnePlus did magic with the cooling system, but it turned out amazing.

Which model to choose: with 6 or 8 GB of RAM? As foreign journalists have found out, the extra 2 GB does not affect performance in any way. Only more open programs will remain in the background. Even 4 GB would be enough, but the buyer likes it when the equipment is crammed to the maximum, and OnePlus takes advantage of this.

Choose by ROM capacity based on your needs. From experience I will say this: if you listen to music online and sometimes upload photos to the cloud or to a computer, 64 GB will be enough for a couple of years.

Autonomy is excellent

The battery was “cut”: it was 3400 mAh in OnePlus 3T, it became 3300 mAh. But OnePlus 5 works 15-20% longer.

Here, the Snapdragon 835 with a 10-nm process technology did its best, and the energy-efficient AMOLED with a low resolution, and even the memory had an impact. LPDDR4 has been replaced by LPDDR4X with half the power consumption. Plus OxygenOS has been optimized: the system uses charge more intelligently.

The “dry” test showed that OnePlus 5 plays FullHD video at maximum brightness for 14.5 hours, and the test subject lasted 8.5 hours in the game Subway Surfers. An excellent result, on par with the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus. Other flagships are catching dust:

With my mode, OnePlus 5 lasted more than a day. That is, in the morning I took it off the charger and the next day by lunchtime there was 5-10% left. At the same time, LTE, Wi-Fi, GPS are constantly working, social networks are synchronized, I am constantly recording something, communicating on Telegram and listening to music online. “Pure” screen operating time is 5-5.5 hours.

OnePlus 5 charges very quickly. You just need a special Dash Charge adapter and cable, which are included in the kit. With them, the battery charges before your eyes: 50% in 25 minutes, 92% in an hour. Then Dash Charge slows down and “pumps in” the remaining balance in another 25 minutes. Total hour and a half. I even stopped charging my smartphone at night. Why, if I have time before going to work?

The kit is minimal: adapter, cable and photo taken on OnePlus 5.

It is not yet clear how such “doping” affects the life of the battery. One thing is clear: if you forgot the adapter or cable at home, you can say goodbye to fast charging. The new Dash Charge kit will cost $28 (1,700 rubles) on the OnePlus website. This does not include shipping costs.

Not the fastest internet and USB

OnePlus 5 supports the LTE Cat.12 standard, maximum Internet speed of 600 Mbps. The new flagships HTC U11, Galaxy S8 or Sony Xperia XZ Premium have a gigabit modem with support for LTE Cat.16. Where the Xperia XZ Premium scored 105 Mbps in Speedtest, the OnePlus 5 showed only 55 Mbps. Not enough.

There are also problems with signal reception. Everything is fine on the street, but in the metro the Internet most often does not work, although the smartphone shows “H+”. At the same time, the call quality is good: the sound in the speaker is clear, the microphones filter out noise well - the interlocutors did not complain.

SIM card tray. As you can see, there is no room for MicroSD.

The disadvantages are smaller, but still disadvantages - the lack of wireless charging and the old USB 2.0 interface. Not to be confused with the connector, it is USB Type-C. That is, it looks new, but transfers files slowly. NFC is here to stay and Android Pay works on OnePlus 5. Verified.

High quality sound

The smartphone has one speaker, on the bottom. It's easy to block with your hand while playing games or watching a movie. But the volume reserve is impressive, and the quality is not bad.

The sound from OnePlus headphones has always been good. This is not at the level of the musical HTC U11 and Meizu Pro 6 Plus, but it is not inferior to competitors like the Galaxy S8 and LG G6. Music lovers will definitely like it. The main thing is that the 3.5 mm audio jack is in place!

OnePlus 5 is one of the few flagships that received Bluetooth 5.0. That is, you can stream sound to a pair of wireless speakers or headphones at the same time.

The aptX and aptX HD codecs are supported. The difference between them is only in the maximum bitrate - 352 versus 576 kbps, but the manufacturer claims: the sound quality is better than on a CD.

Positioning

The OnePlus slogan is the same for all devices, they are positioned the same way every time and we hear that another “flagship killer” has been released. In practice, this is far from true, but among technology enthusiasts, devices from OnePlus have become widespread and there are several reasons for this. The first is that this device is not for everyone, it is not mass-produced, and compared to it, smartphones from Xiaomi and Meizu are consumer goods, not to mention other companies, for example, Huawei or especially Samsung. That is, there is a feeling that OnePlus smartphones are only for people in the know. The second reason is that in terms of price/quality ratio, these devices are good and if you do not need the full set of flagship characteristics, then they may be perfect for you, and the cost will be slightly lower. It cannot be said that OnePlus sells its smartphones for free or at some low price; at the time of release, they cost about 500 dollars/euro, which fits well with the understanding of flagships from A-brands, which cost a little more.

Inside OnePlus, each time they choose a new “victim”, so the previous model OnePlus 3/3T borrowed the design from Huawei smartphones, the same shapes and layout of elements were easily recognizable.

In 2017, the donor for the designer of the five was the iPhone 7 Plus, the same arrangement of elements, dual camera.

The Chinese are not at all embarrassed by the fact that they lack uniqueness in appearance; rather, it is a conscious copying that shows who they went on a campaign against and who they want to surprise with what. Those who buy Chinese Android smartphones often consciously or not, but in opposition to Apple and the iPhone, people give a lot of arguments why they do not want to buy products from an American corporation. It is possible that this is a contrast between two worlds, Android and iOS, but the fact is that with a noticeable difference in cost between the iPhone and other devices, the majority do not choose the iPhone at all, as sales figures prove.

At the same time, OnePlus’s real competitor is not Apple/Samsung or Huawei smartphones, it is still a direct competitor for Chinese companies, and it sometimes costs more than them and this affects the perception, there is a feeling of a higher quality product. The price trick has long been well known and is perfectly applied in practice. Therefore, it is worth considering OnePlus 5 as a device popular in narrow circles, a kind of product for “insiders”. However, it has very definite advantages that may be of interest to the mass consumer, especially when purchasing a device outside of Russia, when there is an opportunity to save on price.

Design, dimensions, control elements

The theater begins with the hanger, the device always starts with the box and how the accessories are packaged and how they look. I’ve always liked OnePlus’ approach, there’s simply nothing to complain about, inside the box there are compartments for charging and cables, a leaflet with an appeal on behalf of the company and other small things.

It is clear that you will throw away the box or hide it out of sight almost immediately, but it creates the mood and affects the perception of the phone. And this is the right approach.

The device is available in two colors - gold and dark gray. For girls and for everyone else, that is, boys and girls mixed.

From time to time, OnePlus releases limited editions, which is how the JCC+ device appeared, but you still won’t be able to find it on sale, so you can consider it a kind of virtual expansion of the model range.

The case is curved on the back towards the edges, which makes the phone more comfortable to grip; it does not slip in your hand and is thin enough to be convenient in a jeans pocket. The size of the smartphone is 154.2x74.1x7.3 mm, weight is 153 grams. For this type of device, it is quite light and this is a big plus, since the body is made of anodized aluminum (we are not talking about any series here, which means ordinary aluminum without any 6000 or even more so 7000 series). The reliability of the case is beyond doubt, the paint does not peel off, as sometimes happens on Huawei, everything is reliable here (anodizing is the best option of all possible and quite expensive).

Inserts for antennas can be seen on the top and bottom ends; in a dark device they are so good that you can only see them by looking closely. To my taste, they do not spoil the overall impression of the model, although in gold they are clearly visible and less successful.

The layout of the control elements is standard for OnePlus; it is repeated from model to model.

Above the screen in the upper left corner there is an indicator for missed events; it is not very bright, but clearly visible. In the settings you can choose the backlight color for various events; there are several such colors.

On the left side there is a paired volume key, and just above there is a three-position lever, with its help you can turn on Do Not Disturb mode or limit notifications only from important applications. The thing is super convenient, it allows you to immediately achieve the desired result without going into the menu, without turning on the device.

On the right side there is an on/off key, just above the tray for two nanoSIM cards.

At the bottom you can see a USB Type C connector, speaker output, as well as a 3.5 mm jack and microphone. The second microphone is located near the camera on the rear panel, it is used when shooting video, and also participates in the noise reduction system during conversations. The camera itself protrudes from the back, but this does not create any problem.

There is a fingerprint sensor under the screen, it works just fine, the touch is recognized instantly and is in no way inferior to how it happens on the iPhone/Galaxy. In addition to the fact that it is a fingerprint sensor, you can assign the touch pad to call one of the functions; a double or long press is recognized. The pad is not pressed, so it all depends not on the force, but on how long you hold your finger on it. For example, I’m so used to the fact that I can quickly launch the camera on my Galaxy with two presses of the Home key, that I chose the same function, it’s very convenient.

On the sides of the sensor there are touch keys; they have no designations, since in the menu you can change their places and choose the location that is familiar to you.

The only possible negative that you will notice over time is the film on the screen, which is glued on at the factory. Despite the fact that there is Corning Gorilla Glass 5, there is also a film. It will get scratched over time and then you will have to peel it off, but it will definitely last you for several months if you handle the device normally.

Display

If you were expecting that the screen would somehow change compared to the previous model from OnePlus, then it was in vain, since it is cheaper to use the same matrices, especially since they have proven themselves well, if you do not pay attention to some points.

Chinese manufacturers strive to use AMOLED matrices, as this makes their products stand out, gives them a touch of respectability, and it turns out that they are no worse than Samsung. Considering that you have to buy AMOLED matrices from Samsung or small manufacturers, they cannot be compared with the latest generations of matrices from Samsung. As a rule, they are distinguished by noticeably lower brightness and the absence of additional energy saving modes. The display in OnePlus 3/3T/5 was no exception. For marketing reasons, the Optic prefix was added to it; in fact, this means that the company's engineers adjusted the color profiles to their liking and considered this ideal. Screen resolution 1920x1080 pixels, 401 ppi with a diagonal of 5.5 inches. Of course, this is not a QHD screen on which you cannot see the pattern of the picture and individual dots, here they are almost invisible, but still sometimes you see the picture a little rough. But for its class of devices this is an excellent screen, in which one can only complain about insufficient brightness when shooting with the camera; the picture looks dark and dull. In all other cases, especially indoors, there is nothing to complain about, everything works plus/minus well.

From the menu you can change the screen color scheme to sRGB or DCI-P3, the second one seemed to me much more interesting than the default one. Custom colors are a simple adjustment of color temperature, you should not play with it, although here everyone decides for themselves.

Another feature of the screen is the display of information from applications the moment you move your hand over the screen. All notifications are shown on a black background, which is convenient.

In the sun, the screen remains readable, there are no special problems here (in camera mode, I repeat, the screen is very dim).

Among the additional settings, I will note the presence of a reading mode (you can add applications for which it will work), as well as a night mode (work according to a schedule or automatically, this is a blue filter).

Battery

Since OnePlus uses all the developments of the parent company OPPO, this device has fast charging called DASH, this is a complete analogue of VOOC technology from OPPO. Charging 4A, 5V and allows you to charge a Li-Pol battery in 65-70 minutes. In fifteen minutes you get about 30 percent battery charge, which is very convenient. Phones without fast charging have become an anachronism for me; too much time is wasted on unnecessary waiting.

The battery capacity is 3300 mAh, which makes you think that the smartphone does not last very long. But that's not true. In practice, the smartphone easily works for two days under normal load, in particular, up to 5-6 hours of screen operation (here it all depends on the brightness of the display, as you understand). For me, this operating time is excellent and makes the model stand out among its classmates; I have to thank the AMOLED screen for this.

The total video playback time at maximum brightness is about 17 hours.

Communication capabilities

Bluetooth version 5.0, there is NFC support (OnePlus 3 did not have it). Supports WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, dual-band. Unlike the same OnePlus 3, there are no problems with WiFi, everything works perfectly.

A few words about hardware GPS, it works well, there are no complaints about it. In any case, in conjunction with A-GPS, the device quickly becomes attached to the area and, when using Google Maps, leads well along the route.

It is written about LTE frequencies at the very beginning, here I would like to add that support for Cat.6 is announced. Frequency aggregation does not work for Cat.6, at least in Russia. If you don't know what it is, then it probably shouldn't bother you.

Memory, RAM, chipset, performance

The device is available in two versions - 6/64 GB and 8/128 GB; we tested the device with maximum characteristics. Considering that there is a Snapdragon 835 inside, this chipset is one of the most productive, and complementing it with fast memory, the manufacturer received maximum performance in all tasks. Moreover, both the parrots in synthetic tests and the real performance of this solution are excellent, look at the test results. The main question is whether 128 GB of internal memory is enough for you (64 GB is an option), but I think everyone is looking for the answer to it themselves, since everyone has different scenarios for using smartphones.

Camera

The front camera in this device is 16-megapixel (f/2.0, EIS, Auto HDR, 1080p), the Sony IMX 371 module is used, the image quality is excellent for this type of camera. There are various facial enhancements, which is important for girls.

The main camera is dual, consisting of a Sony IMX 398 module (f/1.7, EIS, 16 megapixels), as well as a Sony IMX 350 (f/2.6, 20 megapixels). One lens is wide-angle, the second gives an optical zoom of x1.6. Look at paired photographs, each taken with the same lens. Please note that zooming works worse in the evening, noise appears in the photo, the reason is that the 20-megapixel matrix does not have such a fast lens (f/2.6 versus f/1.7).

Also, the dual camera system can be used to blur the background, the algorithm works well, but you can see it for yourself.

The camera interface is simple, there is a manual setting (Pro mode), the ability to display a histogram, save images in RAW, and the like.

When shooting video, you can choose FullHD resolution with an option of 30 or 60 frames per second, for 4K it is only 30 frames per second. The device records sound well thanks to a three-microphone system.

Look at the sample photos in comparison with Nokia 8, Samsung Galaxy S8+, I think they will show you that OnePlus does a good job with photography, the quality of photos is often comparable to S8+, although in the dark they are noisier, as well as in dimly lit rooms.

The OnePlus 5's camera capabilities will be enough for most casual users, but it will also satisfy those who love photography. In my opinion, the camera is on par with the best models from Huawei, but Samsung falls a little short of that, and only in some modes. This is a very, very decent level, so the OnePlus 5 is worth paying attention to in terms of photographic capabilities.

Software

Despite the fact that it runs Android 7.1.1, it uses its own Oxygen OS shell, which differs minimally from regular Android, although it has its own developments.

Play Music is used to play music. There is Dirac HD Sound - this is special software that analyzes and corrects the “color” of the sound. The sound settings include a 7-band equalizer from 68 Hz to 14 kHz. There are also headphone presets there.

The sound in the headphones is simple, there is nothing outstanding here. There is a private gallery for viewing photos, which is nice.

The recorder is simple, but does its job perfectly.

The file manager also does not cause any difficulties, everything is simple and clear.

There is nothing to describe in terms of software here, everything is extremely simple and clear.

Impressions

The speaker volume is always sufficient, the device can be heard. There are no particular complaints about the quality of speech transmission; the noise reduction system works well (there are three microphones).

In Russia, official OnePlus 5 are sold for 40 and 45 thousand rubles in official retail, this is the price for the younger and older versions. Resellers' prices are noticeably lower, they amount to approximately 30 and 35 thousand rubles. But here everyone chooses the presence of a guarantee or its absence, how attractive each option looks.

Compared to the previous OnePlus 3/3T, the design has changed, although the body materials and design remain the same; the screen itself has not changed, although more settings have appeared for it. In my opinion, with the OnePlus 3T priced at 26 and 30 thousand rubles on the gray market, this is not the most interesting offer and it’s not worth saving here; the new model turned out to be noticeably better and more powerful.

On the other hand, for this money there are many offers on the market, let's start with the same Samsung Galaxy S7 EDGE, which costs 30 thousand rubles on the gray market (42-43 thousand in the PCT version). The devices are of different levels in terms of the perception of brands, some advantages are on the side of the S7 EDGE - higher screen resolution, support for Gear VR, water protection, wireless charging, better screen implementation and slightly worse performance. Excellent, albeit single camera. There's a lot to think about here, and it's not a given that you'll choose the OnePlus 5.

The higher quality Chinese smartphones become, the more expensive they sell. In terms of originality and unusualness, I see Meizu Pro 7 as an alternative to OnePlus 5, which also has a dual camera, but also has a second display on the back. A very original device, but the price of 40 and 45 thousand rubles, of course, looks at the level of OnePlus 5 and does not provide any special advantages. Read the first look at this device to understand how interesting it is to you or not.

The list of different competitors of OnePlus 5 can be endless, I have noted only a few. Here someone might be tempted by the fact that there is a 3.5 mm jack, but the sound is not so great, the same Meizu is head and shoulders above with its dedicated DSP for sound. You have to look in detail at what exactly you need from a device, but we can say that OnePlus 5 is successful. Sales of this model in Russia are quite sluggish, both in official deliveries and on the gray market - this is not a mass audience, the product is not for everyone. But the smartphone turned out to be successful and we must give it credit for this.

Despite the fact that the OnePlus brand is quite young, the smartphones it produces have already gained a strong reputation. The company is one of the three popular Chinese manufacturers; it surpasses Meizu in quality, but at the same time it is closest in price to A-class brands.

OnePlus smartphone line

The flagship model at the moment is. This is a thin and elegant device with a Full HD+ display (aspect ratio - 18 by 9). The quality of the display can be equal to Samsung devices. Camera sensors are from Sony.

The operating system is based on Android. The battery allows you to work for a day and a half at medium load and 7 hours in video viewing mode. Original charging allows you to get 90% battery charge in just 1 hour.

It is also worth highlighting other models:

  • OnePlus One was the first model released in 2014, with parameters roughly equivalent to the Samsung Galaxy S5;
  • OnePlus 2 - 2015 model with a 5.5-inch screen and two cameras of 13 and 5 megapixels;
  • OnePlus X - released at the end of 2015, more compact than previous models thanks to a 5-inch screen, the filling corresponds to branded smartphones of 2014;
  • OnePlus 3 - 2016 model, is equipped with a 5-inch screen and features fast charging;
  • OnePlus 5 - released in 2017, its design resembles the iPhone 7 Plus, and in terms of quality it first received the unofficial title of “Chinese flagship”.

The model with the number 4 was not produced, since the number 4 is considered unlucky in Eastern culture.
