Tablet PCs (tablets, tablets) - what do we know about them? Tablet PC - a miracle of modern technology What is a tablet

Oddly enough, today we know much more about tablets than we did just six months ago. And why all? Yes, because the queen of PR and promotion, Apple company, launched its iPad, which marked the beginning of the era of tablet laptops. However, in fairness, it is worth noting that even before Apple’s creation, this type of portable computer existed and was even gaining momentum in terms of sales. So Apple very successfully fell into the general trend, at the same time fueling interest in this type of computer, so surprising for ordinary users.

So, what is a tablet laptop, or Tablet PC? This is a portable device, which, as a rule, has a fairly small display diagonal, comparable to a netbook - usually 9-12″. However, there are also larger “tablets” – up to 13″, and very small tablets with a diagonal of 7-8″. They have a touch screen and can be controlled with either your fingers or a stylus. In many ways, a tablet laptop should be considered as a successor to PDAs, which at the moment are almost completely a thing of the past.

Tablets may also have a physical keyboard. If it is, then this laptop will be called a transformer. Its screen can be easily unfolded and laid flat on the keyboard, allowing it to be used like a regular tablet. If there is no physical keyboard, then there is an on-screen, virtual one. By the way, transformers, as a rule, cost much more than regular tablets - they are considered representatives of the business class of laptops. A cost of $2000 is not uncommon for them. In addition, they have greater performance and are able to cope not only with basic tasks, but also with processes that are more demanding on computer resources.

Tablet laptops appeal to those who don't need to type a lot of text, but who like to watch movies or surf the Internet outside the home. Such people do not need to carry a full-fledged laptop with them; a tablet will suffice for them. As an option, you can buy a netbook.

Well, now - the brightest representatives of tablet laptops in 2010.

Conversations about him have not stopped for several months now. They praise him, scold him, treat him indifferently - but they talk, talk, talk... Quite controversial, but at the same time very stylish, as always, a solution from Apple. Inside is an exclusive Apple A4 processor with a frequency of 1 GHz, own development companies. Not as productive a tablet as we would like, but very status-worthy.

On present moment(May 2010) has not yet been released, but is already one of the most anticipated new products on the market. It differs favorably from the iPad in the presence of USB ports, a webcam and the ability to play Flash video. Based on the NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset, running Android OS.

Another not yet released tablet. The same advantages as the ASUS Eee Pad, as well as an Intel Atom Z530 processor and Windows 7 OS. Although it is not declared as an iPad killer, it may well compete for this title.

An interesting tablet from German manufacturers. Atom N450, 11″, Android OS, camera, USB and everything else included. Looks great and is already on sale.

A typical representative of transformers is expensive, productive and very high-status. Excellent characteristics - 12″, magnesium alloy case, Intel Core i3/i5/i7 processor, large hard drive and availability optical drive. At the same time, it can be dropped (though from a height of 70 cm, no more) and water can be splashed on it (the keyboard is protected from this).

More or less budget transformer, albeit on a fairly weak Intel processor Pentium SU4100 (1.3 GHz). But 4 GB RAM, 320 GB hard drive and Windows 7. An excellent option for those looking for an inexpensive tablet with a physical keyboard.

What is Tablet PC?

Tablet PC (PS tablet) this is the view mobile computers in the form of a tablet. Its prototype was first presented in the early 90s by the company Pen Computing called PenGo Tablet Computer. Further development this direction Microsoft took over. In 2002, Microsoft first introduced a working tablet computer with the Windows XP operating system.
Thanks to touch screen technology, the user can operate the tablet PC using a stylus or fingertips, without using a mouse or keyboard.

Tablet PC is a laptop, but with more capabilities

It is a full-fledged laptop, but with additional functions. Special handle ( stylus) is used to work directly on a computer screen. With its help, you can perform absolutely all tasks that can be performed with a regular computer mouse, such as selecting, copying and opening files, entering text or drawing. Some tablet PCs do not have touch screen, but their stylus is made electronic. Thus, such PCs receive information only from the tip of the pen, and not from the tips of the fingers or touching any other objects. This technology makes it very convenient to use a Tablet PC on vacation, in transport, where you have to write “in weight” when the user’s wrist also lies on the screen. In this case, neither elements of clothing nor movement of the wrist on the screen will lead to the entry of incorrect information.

Tablet PC is easier and more convenient to use than a regular laptop. Unlike desktop computers or laptops, the Tablet PC does not require a flat surface to operate on. For example, if you are at a meeting or presentation, then such a computer will not hide you from your interlocutors, unlike monitors regular laptop or desktop PC. Additionally, tablet PCs can be used while moving or standing, making them ideal for people who are constantly on their feet, such as sales managers, nurses, doctors, waiters, and so on.

Types of tablet computers

There are many manufacturers that produce tablet PCs, differing in size, design, computing speed, etc. But according to their design features, they can all be divided into three types:

Convertible Tablet PC. These tablets look like a regular laptop, as they have a standard laptop keyboard. But their screens rotate 180° around their axis and, moreover, turn out and fold on the other side of the keyboard. After such transformations, the Tablet PC will have a touch screen on one side and a keyboard on the other. Such PCs are also called tablet laptops or tablet netbooks.

Blank Tablet PC. Actually a real tablet computer without a full keyboard, in an ultra-light body and with an elegant design. Some models of such tablet PCs have keyboards, but, as a rule, their keyboards do not have a hard connection to the screen, and all interaction with the PC occurs through the interface Bluetooth.

Shockproof Tablet PC- reliable mobile computers with shockproof housing and hard drive. These extra-durable tablet PC models are ideal for those who need to use them in harsh environments, such as military service, construction, and anywhere else where durability is paramount.

Just like regular laptops, tablet PCs have:

modern high-speed processors optimized for mobile platforms
Enough RAM to handle most tasks
big capacity of hard disks
support for wired and wireless networks, modem connection
Compatible with many software and peripherals

Tablet PCs today are the culmination of the development of mobile computing due to their size, weight and ease of input. Tablet PCs are typically used in places where daily use of laptops is cumbersome and impractical, or cannot provide the required functionality. Such laptop computers Ideal for reading e-books, listening to music, watching videos and photo albums and, of course, surfing the Internet.

Toshiba 3500 Tablet Laptop

Tablet personal computer (tablet pc, tablet PC) - a class of laptops equipped with a tablet handwriting input device combined with a screen. A tablet computer allows you to work with a stylus or fingers, without using a keyboard or mouse.

The user can enter text using the built-in handwriting recognition program, on-screen (virtual) keyboard, speech recognition, or a regular keyboard (if the device has one).

Most tablet PCs run operating system Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. Tablet PCs went on wide sale after the release of this edition, in the fall of the year. Before this, devices of this type were used in narrower markets - in manufacturing, medicine and government agencies. There are also tablets running various variants of GNU/Linux.

According to design, tablet PCs are divided into:

  • "clean tablets"- devices without a full keyboard;
  • tablet laptops, also called "convertibles" convertible) or transformers, because of its ability to transform: the device can look like a laptop, the screen can be rotated around its axis by 180° and placed on the keyboard - the laptop will look like a tablet.
  • UMPC- compact version tablet computer, designed to replace PDA. It has some design differences, as well as some differences in the interface, since it is designed specifically for finger control. May have a built-in keyboard, usually non-standard.

In addition, tablet computers are divided into two classes based on the principle of operation of the tablet:

  • Electromagnetic principle of tablet operation. The most numerous class, allows you to work with the tablet only with the help of a special stylus. The advantages of this approach are high precision text recognition, accuracy of determining the force of pressing, as well as the absence of reaction to accidental pressing of the hand or fingers when writing. As a rule, Wacom technology is used.
  • Pressure sensitive tablet. Less numerous class, although becoming more popular over time. The advantage is that such a tablet can be controlled without using a stylus, which can be convenient in some situations. In addition, this approach makes it possible to create interfaces specifically designed for finger control, including recognition of multiple touches and gestures. UMPCs belong to this class. The disadvantages are less accuracy, worse quality of letter recognition, the negative impact of the tablet on the quality and brightness of the screen, as well as the possibility of accidental clicks when writing.

The most popular tablet laptops are Acer and Fujitsu, as well as

Tablet PCs vs. Laptops

Advantages

  • A tablet PC is much more “human” - you can stand or walk with it, holding it in one hand. The second hand can be used to enter text or click on links while surfing the web. It is convenient to read e-books using the vertical screen orientation.
  • Lying on a table, the folded tablet allows you to work without interrupting your line of sight (for example, in a business meeting)

Flaws

  • A tablet laptop is about $300 more expensive than a regular laptop with the same specifications, although this difference is expected to decrease to $75 over time.
  • Screen mount tablet laptop less secure because the screen is supported by one rotating hinge - unlike a regular laptop, the screen of which is supported by two hinges.
  • The tablet PC screen is currently limited to 14 inches. In addition, a special pressure-sensitive screen coating reduces viewing angles and brightness.

The BQ Tablet PC 1012G tablet computer runs under the control of the operating room Android systems 4.2.2 and is an example of a modern budget tablet developed by a domestic company. Despite the low cost, the device has high technical characteristics. But it also has disadvantages. In this article we will talk about both the advantages and disadvantages of the tablet.

This review continues a series of articles devoted to modern budget Internet tablets. Today we will talk about the BQ Tablet PC 1012G.

BQ (bright&quick) is a young brand. This is a domestic company whose product range currently includes a small number of tablet computers, smartphones and phones. The company's products are manufactured in China, which is no surprise to anyone today.

It is possible that the device that came to me may be supplied in several configuration options, since technical specifications, published on the official website, many parameters do not correspond to reality. Although it is possible that for some reason erroneous data got there. This, unfortunately, happens all the time. However, in some cases you will still have to rely on them.

BQ Tablet PC 1012G is based on a quad-core Allwinner A31S processor with clock frequency 1.5 GHz.

The gadget's RAM capacity is 1 GB.

The device has 8 GB of its own memory, of which about 3.26 GB is available to the user. This is not enough for a modern tablet computer. True, the gadget supports microSD memory cards with a capacity of up to 32 GB.

The computer is equipped with a widescreen TFT display with an IPS matrix, the diagonal of which is 10.1 inches, and the screen resolution is 1200x800 pixels.

The screen quality is at the proper level. This applies to all aspects including image, viewing angles and sensitivity. If I can express my impression in one phrase, it looks beautiful and is easy to operate.

As expected, the image automatically expands when the screen orientation changes. Of course, if this option is not disabled in the settings.

As for network interfaces, the BQ Tablet PC 1012G is equipped with Wi-Fi and 3G modules. The official website also claims the presence of Bluetooth, but no traces of it could be found, as well as the FM and GPS modules, which are also mentioned there.

Cellular networks can be used for both making calls and accessing the Internet. Again, by official version The tablet may work with two SIM cards, but this is not the case. There is only one slot on the device for this purpose.

In addition to all of the above, the gadget is equipped with a built-in microphone and two cameras.

The official version of the battery capacity is 6000 mAh. I don’t know how accurate this figure is. After such volumes of misinformation, it is difficult to trust anything. But I can say with confidence that the battery charge is enough for six and a quarter hours of video viewing. True, for a modern tablet this result can only be called satisfactory. Well, or good, but at a stretch, since for modern budget tablets eight to nine hours of work in this mode have already become the norm.

Externally, the BQ Tablet PC 1012G looks attractive. Its front side is black, and the metal bottom is painted silver.

The build quality is excellent, and the ergonomics are in perfect order. Holding the tablet in your hands is very comfortable.

The device is very light for its size. It weighs only 580g with an aspect ratio of 262x171.8x9.9mm.

In the center above the display, exactly in the middle, is installed front camera, whose resolution is 0.3 megapixels.

On the top edge, on the right edge, there is a barely visible hole for the built-in microphone.

All connectors and controls are located on the right side. There are jacks for connecting headphones and a network adapter, as well as power and volume buttons.

In addition, there is also a compartment covered with a protective cover, which contains slots for installing a memory card and SIM card, a Micro-USB connector and a Mini-HDMI port.

The compartment cover is attached to the body with thin and unreliable-looking strips of transparent plastic. However, it is possible that they are stronger than they seem, especially if you do not pull on them.

On the bottom, in the top center, there is a second camera with a resolution of 2 megapixels. I believe it was originally planned to equip this model with a flash, since next to the camera there is a characteristic hole covered with a cap. Yes, and this flash is indicated in the characteristics. It is possible that there are various modifications, but nothing is said about this.

There is a single speaker located directly below the camera. Its quality, in principle, is tolerable, and the volume is also okay, but it is the same with all the ensuing consequences.

The Internet tablet BQ Tablet PC 1012G runs on the Android 4.2.2 operating system. With installation of additional software the manufacturer didn't bother much. The bare minimum of software is installed. But Google Play works great and everything you need installs from there in minutes. At this moment you can just make sure that network interfaces work as expected.

After installing the standard gentleman's kit, we proceed to extensive field tests.

Internet surfing is fine. Even in standard browser pages open very quickly, although, of course, this largely depends on the signal level and the connected tariff plan.

However, at this stage I encountered a small problem. On the default on-screen keyboard There are only thirty-one letters in the Russian layout. There are no “Yo”, which can still be survived, and “Ъ”, which, of course, is no good.

But since you can install any keyboard you like yourself, I don’t see a big problem in this. Moreover, today there is plenty to choose from.

Online video works fine. I watched a few videos on YouTube and was quite pleased. Everything is fine with online TV too. True, I only turned it on for about half an hour, but if there are any problems with this, then during this time they usually appear. So it's okay.

The microphone is very weak. You won't be able to use your tablet as a voice recorder. However, the instructions say that the microphone should be kept no further than thirty centimeters from the mouth. But when making video calls via Skype, burying your face in the tablet is also not an option. Especially considering the location of the microphone.

The situation with cameras is very interesting. As is often the case with inexpensive models, their quality is far from perfect. In particular, color rendition is poor, and the lack of autofocus leads to a decrease in image clarity.

But the BQ Tablet PC 1012G has one more problem that I have never encountered on other tablets. To take a photo with the rear camera, you need to hold the tablet motionless for a few seconds after releasing the shutter.

At first glance, it seems that the photo is already ready. A thumbnail even appears in the interface. But if you change the position of the gadget at this moment, the picture will be ruined.

Interestingly, the front camera is completely devoid of this drawback. The only thing you can show her is distorted colors. And, of course, low resolution does not contribute to high clarity.

Skype works relatively well. Despite the weak microphone, there is enough audibility for communication. Your interlocutor may have to turn up the volume on his device, but these are technical details.

The main thing is that the Internet connection is stable. Otherwise, the picture on the screen may become blurry. But this complaint is no longer about the tablet.

Performance is one of the most pleasant factors for which a gadget can be forgiven a lot. The power of the BQ Tablet PC 1012G sometimes makes you forget that we are dealing with a budget device, since demanding games run perfectly on it.

The AnTuTu Benchmark application rated the performance level of the tested tablet at 12,239 points. For comparison, Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 was rated by the same program at 18,088 points. And when budget tablet can be compared with the recent flagship, it's not just good, it's excellent.

The package includes a tablet, network adapter, Micro-USB/USB cable for synchronizing the gadget with a personal computer, user manual and warranty card.

Interestingly, when synchronizing with a computer, the battery is charged at the same time. This raises the question: why did the manufacturer need to make a separate socket for an atypical adapter when it was possible to organize all this via a USB interface?

That's all. Let's remember the positive and negative properties of the device.

So, BQ Tablet PC 1012G is a very attractive tablet with good ergonomics, light weight and high quality assemblies. It has an excellent screen with high-quality images, good sensitivity and wide viewing angles.

The main advantage of the device is its powerful hardware, providing high performance.

But there are also many disadvantages. For example, a small amount of its own memory or operating time without recharging. I believe that for a modern tablet this figure is lower than it should be, about three hours. Although everyone is free to have their own opinion on this issue.

One speaker is also a significant drawback. I don’t even remember the last time I saw such savings. The main thing is that there is plenty of space. Why bother so much?

Cameras are another drawback. Especially the back one. The microphone is also weak.

As for the information on the official website, there are no comments at all.

I would also like to note a couple of nuances that are not formally considered disadvantages, but are worth paying attention to.

First of all, I want to remind you that Bluetooth module not here. If you are used to using this interface, for example, to exchange data, connect a headset, or listen to music on a stereo system personal computer, then on the BQ Tablet PC 1012G you will be deprived of all this.
