All major search engines are trying to personalize search results based on data about the person in front of the monitor. This phenomenon is called the “filter bubble”: the user sees only those results that are consistent with his preferences or that the system deems as such.

YaCy is a decentralized search engine that works on the principle of P2P networks. Each computer on which the main one is installed software module, scans the Internet independently, that is, it is an analogue of a search robot. The results obtained are collected into a common database that is used by all YaCy participants.

It’s difficult to say whether this is better or worse, since YaCy is a completely different approach to organizing search. The absence of a single server and owner company makes the results completely independent of anyone's preferences. The autonomy of each node eliminates censorship. YaCy is capable of searching the deep web and non-indexed public networks.

Why do you need this

If you are a supporter of open source software and a free Internet, not subject to the influence of government agencies and large corporations, then YaCy is your choice. It can also be used to organize a search within a corporate or other autonomous network. And even though YaCy is not very useful in everyday life, it is a worthy alternative Google from a search process perspective.

This service is better than others for finding facts and calculating data. Wolfram|Alpha collects and organizes knowledge available on the Web from a variety of fields, including science, culture and entertainment. As for the fate of alternative search engines, it is simple: to be very niche projects with a small audience, therefore without clear commercial prospects or, conversely, with complete clarity of their absence.

If you look at the examples in the article, you can see that such search engines either specialize in a narrow but popular niche, which, perhaps, has not yet grown enough to be noticeable on the radars of Google or Yandex, or they are testing an original hypothesis in ranking, which is not yet applicable in regular search.

For example, if a search on Tor suddenly turns out to be in demand, that is, results from there are needed by at least a percentage of Google’s audience, then, of course, ordinary search engines will begin to solve the problem of how to find them and show them to the user. If the behavior of the audience shows that for a significant proportion of users in a significant number of queries, results given without taking into account factors depending on the user seem more relevant, then Yandex or Google will begin to produce such results.

“Be better” in the context of this article does not mean “be better at everything.” Yes, in many aspects our heroes are far from Yandex (even far from Bing). Thunderbird includes a message indexing and search system called "Gloda", which is short for "Global database". It improves search performance, provides sophisticated full-text search capabilities and displays faceted (categorized) search results.

Global search queries all of your messages, regardless of the account the message is associated with or the folder where the message is stored. The Quick Filter, on the other hand, is used to search for messages in the current message list. (See the Quick Filter Toolbar article for information on using the Quick Filter.)

Global search is enabled by default. (It can be disabled on the Advanced panel in the Thunderbird options preferences .) The global search text box is located on the right side of the toolbar above the Quick Filter bar.

The search is performed in all fields in all messages: subject, message body, From address, To address, etc. The search is not case-sensitive - searching for "thunderbird" will return messages that contain both "thunderbird" and "Thunderbird".

You can use the wildcard character "*" at the end of your search item. "thunder*" will then not only find messages with "Thunderbird" but also those about "thunderbolts".

Search results are displayed in a new tab. You will be able to filter the search by various criteria.

Searching for a single term

Enter a term in the search box. As you type, a drop-down list will display possible matches for your term (such as email addresses that match the characters you have entered).

Searching for multiple terms

Enter multiple terms in the search box. Thunderbird will search for messages that contain at least one occurrence of each of the specified terms. If you enclose multiple terms within quotation marks, Thunderbird will search for the words as a phrase. That is, the search results will only contain messages that have all the words in the order they are specified in the search field. These two types of searches can be combined. For example, if you enter:

Thunderbird will find emails that contain the term "converting" and the phrase "imap pop".

Examples

Search for the terms "new", "Thunderbird" and "pages" (without any quotation marks). Results should include messages that contain at least one occurrence of each of the terms:

You can combine these two types of searches. For example, search for "New Thunderbird" and "pages" returns messages that contain the phrase "new Thunderbird" and the word "pages":

Search results

Search results are displayed in a new tab. There is a panel on the left that categorizes the results, showing, for example, the number of messages containing the term(s) in conversations with specific people, or in messages stored in particular mail folders, etc.

Filtering search results

Use the Filters fields in the left panel to filter the messages returned by the original search. If you click an item under "Folder", "People" or "Account, you will be given the option to specify whether the message must (or must not) contain the item.

For example, say you were searching for "Thunderbird" AND"pages". You could refine the search results by selecting messages where you were a recipient (by clicking the To Me checkbox). Then you could further refine the results by selecting specific people and mail folders associated with the message (by clicking on the text in the left panel). (To remove selected people or mail folders from the filter criteria, click on the text again.)

Analyzing and filtering search results by date

A timeline is displayed above the messages included in the search results. The timeline shows the number of messages that match the search criteria, organized in chronological order.

Global search

You can quickly search for data in the system by entering a search query in command line. Data is searched across all sections of the system, including user ones, regardless of where the search is launched from - from the main menu or from a specific section.

How the search is performed

The search is performed in all fields of the record - both text and reference, as well as in the following details: [Addresses], [Means of communication] and [Payment details]. For example, you can find a counterparty by entering it in the search bar alternative name or telephone number, address or bank account number.

Search queries are processed taking into account common typos and morphology - taking into account the different forms of words entered in the search bar. The request can be entered in any register. Simply enter the text you are looking for, for example, the title of a knowledge base article or the last name of a contact. For a more precise search, you can specify the query, for example, enter “Avdorov director axiom.”

For section data to be displayed in global search results, the [Index for full-text search] checkbox must be enabled in the section wizard. How search results are presented

Search results are presented in the form of a register of records containing the text of the search query or part of it. In each found record, the query text for which a match was found is highlighted in bold ( ).

Results are displayed by relevance, both for the entire list of results and when filtering the found records. For example, if the search was performed from the [Contacts] section, then records from this section will be displayed at the beginning of the list, and records from other sections of the system will be displayed below. And if you set a filter by contact on the search results page, then matches by full name will be displayed first in the list.

If a user does not have access rights to a specific column of an object, for example, to view the invoice amount, then such a column is not displayed on the global search results page.

Note

The rules for displaying search results are defined using system settings“Default object weight for global search” and “Default primary column weight for global search.”
To display search results based on typos and morphology, enable the “Display search results by partial match” system setting.
To regulate the display of partial match search results and increase the likelihood of finding data if the search query is inaccurate, set the value of the system setting “Match percentage to be displayed in search results, %”.
