Design, materials and assembly
Samsung Galaxy J2 Core's design is not similar to modern smartphone. Well, that's it. There is a feeling that it was presented not at the end of August 2018, but at least a couple of years ago.
The device has a plastic case with a glossy back cover, which is not only very easily soiled, but also quickly becomes covered with scratches.
On the front there are huge bezels around the display with a classic 16:9 aspect ratio. The margin at the top is slightly higher than at the bottom.
And in order to justify the Galaxy J2 Core, one could say what to expect from a budget phone modern solutions not very reasonable. But nevertheless, looking at modern budget phones from other manufacturers (even less famous ones), with more practical cases and elongated 18:9 displays, with small frames, a logical question arises: why can they, but such a giant as Samsung cannot?
But despite all the low-cost materials and the not very practical body, the build of the smartphone is decent - I didn’t notice any creaks or poorly fitting parts in my sample.
There is no oleophobic glass coating on the front, which, together with the glossy cover noted above, does not create a pleasant tactile sensation from using the smartphone and naturally collects anything at all: fingerprints, stains, dust particles and lint. And getting rid of the latter is not very easy.
Case color options for at the moment There are two: black and gold, but both options have a black front panel. And by the way, most likely the gold version of the lid will not be the same brand.
Layout of elements
In front, above the display, there is a cutout with an earpiece, a proximity sensor and a front camera. There is no light sensor in the smartphone, but there is a substitute that uses the front camera to determine the level of ambient light - I will talk about this method a little later.
Below the screen is a frame with the Samsung logo. The inscription is a little darkened, so it doesn’t catch the eye, but it would be better not to have it at all.
On the right side there is a power button, and on the left there are two separate keys volume adjustment. All buttons are plastic.
The top edge is completely empty, and on the bottom there is a microUSB port, a single microphone and a 3.5 mm audio jack.
At the back we see a protruding block with the main camera eye and flash ( safety glass slightly recessed into the frame), a cutout with the main multimedia speaker to the right of the unit and the manufacturer’s logo below it.

The smartphone feels comfortable in the hand due to its small size and rounded body shape. It is comfortable to use with one hand - you can reach any area on the screen.
There is also nothing special in the arrangement of the control elements - all the buttons are easy to feel, and the device does not slip out of your hands.
Samsung Galaxy J2 Core display
If you look at the parameters Samsung screen Galaxy J2 Core, then it may seem that everything is very bad. There is a 5-inch TFT display with qHD resolution (960x540 pixels) and an aspect ratio of 16:9.
In fact, the display turned out to be quite good. Let's start with screen resolution. The fact that it is not high is noticeable. In particular, this is clearly visible on small objects in applications. But such a situation can be called the norm in the budget segment. Although, of course, I would like to see HD resolution, as is the case in some other state phones.
The colors are rich, the picture is contrasty and bright. The viewing angles are quite decent and, remarkably, no distortion was noticed.
In general, the matrix is good, even though it is TFT. Somehow adjust, adjust colors or white balance regular means it is forbidden. But there is an “Outdoor” mode - when activated, the maximum screen brightness increases a little more for greater comfort of use.
A little earlier, I promised to talk about the method of auto-brightness adjustment (let me remind you, there is no separate dedicated sensor). Each time the screen is activated, the smartphone takes a photo with the front camera and measures the ambient light, after which the brightness changes. Of course, this is not as convenient and fast as in the case of a normal light sensor, however this option at least there is.
Performance
The hardware installed in the Samsung Galaxy J2 Core fully corresponds to its positioning. The processor is the manufacturer's proprietary SoC Exynos 7570. A processor with 4 Cortex-A53 cores, made using a 14 nm process technology, operates with a maximum clock frequency of up to 1.4 GHz. Graphics chip - Mali-T720 MP1.
The smartphone, logically, is not strong in synthetic tests. Moreover, it could not pass some tests - for example, AnTuTu or some of 3DMark.
However, this is not so important, because the main thing is how it performs in normal use. And here the Samsung Galaxy J2 Core, surprisingly, is good. The shell works smoothly and the smartphone does not hesitate when opening programs. This situation is achieved through the use of a lightweight version of the Android 8.1 Go Edition OS and its optimization. But we will talk about it in more detail later. In short, for “get-togethers” in messengers, scrolling through feeds social networks, calls, not very active browsing and other typical tasks - the smartphone is quite suitable.
As for memory capacity, this is the minimum amount for 2018. RAM only 1 GB, and permanent - 8 GB, of which 5.51 GB is available to the user. The permanent memory can be expanded with a microSD card up to 256 GB.
With gaming performance, I think everything is clear. The smartphone is not designed for heavy games, but the buyer or owner of such a device does not need it. At the same time, playing some casual game on J2 Core is quite possible.
Cameras
The Samsung Galaxy J2 Core has a main camera module with a resolution of 8 megapixels, f/2.2 aperture and autofocus.
About the quality of the photo... we can simply say that it is ordinary. In general, in such a budget, smartphones shoot approximately the same, and the Samsung Galaxy J2 Core did not manage to become an exception to the rule. Even in good daylight, photographs come out of low quality, and in poor daylight, even more so. There are few details captured, which is especially noticeable when you zoom in on the finished photo. And in artificial lighting, the white balance sometimes gets crazy.
The camera release is fast, autofocus works fine, but even despite this, if there is not a lot of light around, you can get a blurry shot. HDR functions - no. The smartphone is capable of recording video in 1920×1080 resolution, but the quality is very poor.
Front camera module - 5 MP, f/2.2 aperture. The front camera is also quite weak.
The camera application is very simple and there are practically no additional options. Everything is limited to a couple of filters, a shutter timer and the ability to turn on the grid.
In general, things are modest in terms of photo capabilities.
Autonomy
The Samsung Galaxy J2 Core is equipped with a removable 2600 mAh battery, which, in combination with a 5-inch low-resolution qHD display, simple hardware and software, is enough for approximately 1.5-2 days of operation.
Of course, you can completely discharge the gadget during daylight hours, but with moderate use, if you do not load it with heavy tasks, but perform only those for which the device is designed, then the result is very worthy. For example, I used the J2 Core as a second smartphone and it worked on a single charge for 3 days 9 hours with 7 hours 24 minutes of active screen.
Naturally, the smartphone does not support any fast charging and can be fully charged in a few hours using a regular charger.
Sound and communications
The speaker of the smartphone has sufficient volume and average quality. But it’s worth giving the manufacturer credit - Samsung didn’t skimp, and therefore didn’t combine the earpiece with a multimedia speaker.
Although the main speaker is not located very well - on the back, that is, the sound will be slightly muffled. It’s good that the camera block protrudes a little, so you can hear the melody when making a call without any problems.
The speaker doesn't sound very loud, and the quality is average.
The sound in the headphones is acceptable, but I can't say anything special about it. And maybe the volume won't be enough for some. There is no built-in equalizer for sound adjustments.
The smartphone supports work in mobile networks 2G, 3G and 4G. The Wi-Fi module works fine and doesn’t fall off, but as is usually the case with state-owned products, it is limited to supporting exclusively 2.4 GHz networks.
There were no problems with Bluetooth 4.2. GPS (A-GPS, GLONASS, BDS) also works fine. The NFC module was not delivered.

There aren't even the simplest headphones included - that's also a minus; my previous Samsung, which I bought a year ago, had simple headphones of decent quality, although not vacuum ones. Externally this is a very beautiful phone. But there is no film, which I think is a minus (the previous Samsung had film). And, despite the listed shortcomings, I like this phone. I recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by JustLucky from A wonderful mobile phone. The phone is pretty good. The only caveat is that there is not enough built-in memory for large applications; 4 out of 8 GB are occupied by the system. I was especially pleased with the presence of a built-in adapt sound program.
